Sotheby’s Int. Realty Czech Republic offers for sale a winery in South Moravia, based on two large wine cellars with a size of 200 m2 and 350 m. The total area of the vineyard is 14,720 m2. One of the cellars is one of the most famous historical cellars of Šatov and the whole Znojmo region.
The painted cellar is actively visited by Czech and foreign tourists. Every year, the cellar is visited by more than 10,000 visitors. Both cellars are built right next to each other and were in the past connected via underground corridors.
The first cellar currently serves as a museum with a wine bar and the second can be used to produce and store wine. Above the cellars is a terrace with seating area and a romantic view of the Šatov panorama. The building with cellars is connected to a modern well-kept vineyard, where the most popular grape varieties of the South Moravian Region are planted. Wine from these vineyards can be tasted and purchased in the Painted Cellar.
HISTORY OF THE CELLAR
The painted cellar was not originally used for wine production, but was a sand mine. Sand from local mining was of high quality and was exported to Vienna, where it served as an additional component to stucco mortars. The sand from Šatov was used to reconstruct Vienna City Hall.
It was not until 1884 that the purpose of the painted cellar changed and the first owner opened a private wine bar for the first time. It was at this time that underground rooms were built and the wine bar operated here until 1945. From 1934 to 1968, a native of Šatov and artist Maximilian Apeltauer created the present-day cellar. Apeltauer developed a unique painting technique that still keeps the colors on the brittle sandy surface.
Painted frescoes adorn the entire cellar. The lounges are themed. The first is intended for ladies, the second is tuned to the hunting style of Tyrol, the other is men's lounge and the last one is dance lounge, which is still used to listen to music. In the corridors from the 1920s we can find pictured Vienna City Hall, Vranov nad Dyjí Chateau, the Vienna Ferris Wheel in Prater and a view of Znojmo. At the end of the corridor is a fairytale section, which forms the oldest part of the entire cellar. The cellar also includes an old mining shaft 30 m deep with two floors of galleries, because in addition to sand, clay was also mined here in the past. Thanks to clay mining, the cellar boasts several kilometers of corridors.
Wines from this unique winery can be found in many Prague luxury restaurants, such as the Ungelt restaurant in the city center.
