Årby is beautifully set in a traditional agricultural landscape, about 20 kilometres northeast of Uppsala, which is only 20 minutes away by car. You can reach Arlanda Airport within about 30 minutes, and a trip to Stockholm by car takes only about 70 minutes.
The property is surrounded by open fields punctuated by small groves, as well as large forested areas with a combination of coniferous and deciduous trees. Close by are Rasbokil Church, farms and a variety of mostly year-round residential areas.
Årby has a long and rich history. It was first mentioned in 1344, when Uppsala Cathedral owned land in Årby. After this, title has passed between a good number of families, such as the Schildt, Von Post, Brahe and Båth Johansson houses. The current main building was commissioned by Jurgen Schildt and his wife, Anna Axelsdotter Kruus, in the middle of the 17th century.
The total area of the property is l 485 hectares, and includes about ten buildings with an aggregate area of 5,451 square metres. Three of the buildings are used for residential purposes, with the remainder being farm and auxiliary buildings.
The residential buildings consist of a magnificent main building designed in the Swedish royal style of the 17th and early 18th centuries with two wing buildings that together form a courtyard arrangement that is closed on three of its four sides. The farm and auxiliary buildings consist of a large barn, an old stable, a carriage house, henhouse and/or sheep shelter, as well as several storage buildings. In addition, there is a building that can be used for purposes relating to hunting.
These buildings form a cohesive and functional unit, in which the main building and its wings are outstanding examples of the magnificent architecture of 17th and 18th century. The entire property is a fantastic reminder of Sweden’s period as a great power, and has a well-documented and fascinating history.
